We cannot deny the fact that African women are achieving great heights and transforming the world through words and works. Across different sectors, you would find African women making a difference. Their influence is widespread and remarkable.

Smart Data Power, a data-driven marketing and communications company, carried out a study of all geolocated Twitter accounts in Africa. From this study, 15% are women from different professionals. They include politicians, businesswomen, journalists, opinion leaders, and personalities from civil society. 

Using different yardsticks such as sounding board, the volume of commitments, countries represented, and date of account creation, a list of the top 200 most influential African women on Twitter was released.


Of the list of 200 outstanding African women, 22 are Nigerians. In the first position, there is Linda Ikeji –  a famous Nigerian writer, entrepreneur, and blogger, who feeds people news and gossip through her platform. She tweets @lindaikeji. After her, there is Prof Thuli Madonsela (South Africa) as the second. Professor Thulisile “Thuli” Madonsela is the Law Faculty Trust Chair for Social Justice and Law Professor at the University of Stellenbosch. An advocate and a professor of law, she tweets @ThuliMadonsela3. Tonto Dikeh (Nigeria) occupies the third position. Tonto Dikeh is a Nigerian actress, singer, songwriter, and humanitarian. She tweets @TONTOLET. Others include Bouthaina Kamel (Egypt), Rita Dominic (Nigeria), Martha Karau (Kenya), Connie Ferguson (South Africa), Betty Kyallo (Kenya), Sarah Abdelbaky (Egypt), Mercy Abang (Nigeria) and Toke Makinwa (Nigeria).

Also on the list is Versatile Media Personality, Lifestyle Blogger and a Digital Marketer, Elsie Godwin, making it to the top 100 as no 97. 

Elsie Godwin has proven herself to be an experienced and skilled Social Media Strategist/Manager and an outstanding conversationalist through her craft as a Radio/TV Presenter and Producer . 

She strongly believes in using her voice to add value and contribute to nation-building. She tweets @ELSiEiSY.

Worthy of mention among notable others are Lola Shoneyin, Sally sulieman, Kaylah Oniwo, Bolanle Olukanni, Monalisa China Coker and Abang Mercy. In general, Nigerians, South Africans, and Kenyans dominate the list.
