Rowan Atkinson reveals secret behind Mr Bean’s success on 30 year anniversary

Mr. Bean aired 30 years ago this year! And to mark the monumental anniversary, Rowan Atkinson has shared what he believed is the secret to the character’s long-lasting success.

According to Atkinson, Mr Bean’s legacy is all down to his ‘childish anarchic behaviour’.

The actor has always thought that the series was likely to be successful because of Mr Bean being ‘essentially a child in a man’s body’. And despite the show’s running success, even to this day – the 65-year-old admitted that he found filming Mr. Bean very stressful.

‘I’m sorry to say that I find all filming stressful but Mr Bean filming especially so, because of the burden of responsibility I feel to make it funny,’ he began.

Part of Mr Bean’s charm was that he never spoke – although Rowan went on to add that he ‘often’ wished he would talk. Although this is why the character talks more in Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie.

‘We felt that he had to talk more so that we could tell the story,’ Atkinson continued.

Mr Bean was a British sitcom created by Atkinson and Richard Curtis.

The series was originally broadcast on ITV, beginning with the pilot on 1 January 1990 and ending with The Best Bits Of Mr Bean on December 15 1995.
